In my story from blog #2 of my Printing Series, I had to scale the entire image from an average page size into a giant banner. Knowing those dimensions would have saved hours of effort.
Measures can be taken to avoid the pitfalls of being a print liaison.
First, find a printer and get to know them. Most printers I know will be happy to give tours of their facility. The fundamental preference for any printer to partner with designers and creatives results in more business for them. Learning the capabilities of the printer you use is key.
Secondly, have a checklist of questions prepared for the client. It is easy to forget the essential questions during initial consultation. Items such as budget, sizing and usage of the final product will help the design process run smoothly. Having this data on hand will keep the entire team on track.
Finally, study printing terminology. Know what terms like bleed, overprint, anti-aliasing, offset, and halftone mean. Know the weight of paper and the various methods of finishing are. Learn more terminology from my friends at PropPrint Digital. You’ll not only sound like you know what you’re doing you’ll also become a valuable asset to the client.
